Introduction on Bovine Somatotropin

Somatotropin (ST) is a naturally occurring protein hormone that regulates growth in humans and other animals. Each species of animal has its own version of somatotropin. Human somatotropin (HST) is used to treat dwarfism. Research beginning in the 1930s revealed that administering somatotropin to animals increased milk yield.

Animal Health Issues of Bovine Somatotropin

Proponents claim that hundreds of studies have been performed, none of them showing an increased incidence of ill health in bovine somatotropin (BST) treated cows. Even in studies where large doses of BST, up to 60 times the commercial dose, were given to cows, the health of the animals was not affected.
