The Techno-Future: It's Scary

The last three decades have seen scientific and technical advances which eclipse the progress of the previous century. It brings to mind a saying by the great science fiction writer Sir Arthur C. Clarke, who died recently:

“Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

And indeed, all around us are examples which would have seemed magical only a generation ago, not least the means by which you are reading this. Even Sir Arthur, in his most celebrated work "2001 - A Space Odyssey", only envisaged a primitive version of the Internet called the Newspad - confined to an electronic version of the world's newspapers. As we all know, things were rather more sophisticated than that, long before the turn of the century.

Another great thinker and innovator, Thomas Edison, first demonstrated sound recording in November 1877, using tinfoil-coated cylinders as a medium. Emile Berliner patented the wax-coated disc ten years later. Little real development took place until the microgroove L.P. in 1948, bringing a significant improvement in playing time and sound quality. With tape recorders largely confined to broadcasters and enthusiasts, and the cassette tape not becoming popular until the late 1960s, sound recording as far as the general public was concerned was thus confined to a stylus in a groove for almost a hundred years.

Since the Compact Disc appeared in the early 1980s, the sophistication of this branch of technology has grown at an exponential rate. The CD once appeared to be the ultimate recording medium, using a laser instead of a stylus and so eliminating wear and resulting deterioration in sound quality. But after what seems no time at all, even the CD is beginning to look old-fashioned, with the future clearly belonging to mp3 and the like, with no moving parts at all. Or does it?

It could certainly be argued that the mp3 player would be next to impossible to improve on as a means of storing sound recordings. With capacity of tens of gigabytes freely available, enabling thousands of songs to be stored in a unit not much bigger than a credit card, one may well ask what can possibly come next. And that, frankly, is beginning to worry me.

For one inevitable result of technical advances is the ability they give governments to strengthen their control of the population they are supposedly elected to serve. This has become especially true of the United Kingdom in recent years. It has been reported than an incredible, and appalling, 25% of the world's closed-circuit TV cameras are concentrated in this little island, spying on all and sundry. A citizen - even a child of ten - is routinely fingerprinted, photographed and a DNA sample taken for the smallest offence - even if no charges are brought. The so-called fight against terrorism is an excuse constantly parroted, with the age-old mantra that "if you"ve done no wrong you've nothing to fear'.

So why am I so concerned about the sinister potential of technology? Because of the logical final step in the development of telephony, sound and image recording and transmission - implantation within the human brain. You can just imagine the adverts: "No more batteries - this unit runs on your brain"s own electrical energy! Say goodbye to earphones and tangled wires! The ultimate in convenience and 24/7 availability! Never lose your phone or music player again!'

It all sounds wonderful, doesn't it? And, so long as the implant included an off switch, perhaps it might be. How long, though, before such a facility became first an optional extra, then simply not included? The prospect of never being able to disconnect yourself from the rest of the world is terrifying. It would undoubtedly be the greatest tool ever available for governments to control its citizens, and for big business to sell its wares to a literally captive audience.

Anyone who passionately believes in personal freedom should be increasingly wary of new technology, and the shadowy people behind it. If you need convincing, just read George Orwell's book "Nineteen Eighty-Four" - while you still can.

Steps to Take When Your Cell Phone Drops Inside Any Liquid

Follow these steps immediately your cell phone drops inside water or any form of liquid so that you can revive your cell phone. I have seen several people loosing their phones simply because the phones dropped inside water, solution or any liquid.

Step 1: Remove your cell phone from the liquid and Switch it off immediately.

Step 2: Remove the battery.

Step 3: Remove the SIM card.

Step 4: Unbolt the screws of the phone and bring out the panel and clean it with

a brush or toothbrush and Methylated spirit. Or you can as well dry it inside the sun without cleaning it with methylated spirit, only if it just dropped inside clean water. (Option: consult a Technician after the 3rd step has been implemented by you)

Step 5: Use a blower or put it under a heated bulb to dry the phone panel and clean

the power contacts on the panel and clean the housing of the phone with a dry cloth or cotton board and leave it for some time, so it will be free of any liquid. When you have certified that it is dry, couple your phone back and power on to continue enjoying your phone.(Option: consult a Technician after the 3rd or 4th step).

Step 1 to 3 is not an option for you if you want to revive your cell phone. Make sure you do not put the phone on unless you complete the 5th step. And please do not use a blower on the housing of phone.

If you don't strictly adhere to this "5 sure-fire steps" your cell phone may end up not powering on again.

Technology: Beneficial or Hazardous?

We've all come to recognize technology as something that affects our everyday lives. But as of late, people have begun to speculate what effects certain technology have on our bodies. For example, the most common piece of technological wizardry used in this debate is the cell phone.

Many people have complained about their cell phones causing them headaches. When scientists initially researched the problem, they discovered that the phones, like many other pieces of technology, were releasing EMF (electro-magnetic frequency) waves into the surrounding atmosphere. These waves are said to be passing through us and affecting us on an unconscious level. This belief was further proven when scientists held up a cell phone to a microphone or other regular phone and heard strange static or high-pitch noises emanating from it.

So they've figured out that cell phones can affect certain artificial devices. But where does this lead? Well, on a recent story by CTV news, investigators stated that more research is needed before a final conclusion can be determined. But they also mentioned how there's a gap of between 5 and 10 years from when a new piece of technology is invented to when it can be fully researched and investigated. But by that time, a newer piece of technology has already come out. Technology is advancing quicker than researchers can study it.

And because of this controversial debate, it has lead people to take different sides on the issue. Some say that when you hold up a cell phone to your ear, the microwaves emanating from it are essentially cooking your brain. Others feel that technology as a whole has no adverse effects whatsoever and can only benefit our society. And then there are yet other people who are against specific forms of technology due to one reason or another (i.e. radiation), such as computer monitor screens, televisions and even some things as simple as remote controls. Hydro towers delivering electricity throughout the countries of the world also scare some people, who believe that they're sending out too strong of a signal and that it can only lead to problems for us in the future.

Well, no matter how many opinions there are in the world, we can all agree on one thing. Every electronic device does release some form of EMF wave or pulse. The question is simple.
Are the waves or pulses strong enough to adversely affect our health? Or has this whole debate been sparked by the technology-haters of our society?

The answer to this question, I leave for you to decide.
