Are You Smart Enough to be Stupid?

There’s a famous quote by Dan Quisenberry, one of the greatest relief pitchers in baseball history. “It helps to be stupid if you're a relief pitcher,” he said. “Relievers have to get into a zone of their own. I just hope I'm stupid enough."

It sounds odd that a successful athlete would use the word “stupid” about himself, but when you think about it, a lot of world-class athletes use similar terms. They might not talk about being stupid, but they do talk about how important it is not to think too much when they’re performing, or how they should just react to the flow of the game and not analyze it, and so forth.

What they mean is that, although the brain is a marvelous organ, it can be a stumbling block to good athletic performance. When you’re in the middle of a tennis match, with a ball speeding at you like a rocket, you can’t spend precious time deciding what kind of spin you should put on your return, or where you should try to place the ball. If you get your brain involved at moments like that you’ll mess up. You need to just react, and let your instincts take over. If you’ve done your work in practice, your muscles will know what to do.

Life can be like that. Oh, sure, you’re not always faced with the kind of split-second decisions you have to make on a tennis court or in a baseball game, but there are times you just can’t think too much. We all tend to over-analyze at times, and it can lead to a kind of mental paralysis. When you think too much about anything, whether it’s as important as where to invest your retirement funds or as mundane as what entrée to choose in a restaurant, you can get so mixed up that you make a decision that’s inappropriate, unnatural, and just plain wrong.

I’m not saying to shut off your mind, to just flip the switch and go through your day on automatic pilot. There’s a time for analysis, for collecting information, researching a problem, and sifting through it in a careful manner before making your decision. All that involves your left brain, which handles the analytical side of your mental makeup. The left brain is valuable and important, to be sure.

What I’m saying, though, is to make sure you also use your right brain, which handles the intuitive side of things. Right brain insights come to us when we’re relaxed, dreamy, or distracted from the task we’ve been working on. There are countless stories of scientists, artists, inventors, and other creative people who came up with great ideas in this way. Archimedes discovered an important principle in physics while he was taking a bath. Robert Louis Stevenson got the idea for “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” from a dream. Albert Einstein visualized his theories first and then worked out the details.

The lesson is that when you have an important decision to make, collect all the data, organize it, think about it, and then give yourself time to turn your brain off. Take a walk, watch a TV program, go out for a beer, maybe even take a nap. Turn off your left brain, and let your intuitive right brain have a chance to offer some input. You may be surprised at what you come up with.

Sometimes you have to stop thinking so much in order to get the best ideas.

Was O. J. Simpson a Victim of His Own Mental Illness?

Orenthal James Simpson, commonly known as O.J., was a frequent focus of media attention for many years while he was playing football at the University of Southern California, and then in the National Football League. He was comfortable with his celebrity status and pursued a professional life being in front of the cameras, as an actor, and as a sportscaster for NBC (Gilbert, 2008). He experienced a difficult childhood as evidenced by his low socio-economic status, participation in criminal activity, and his being raised by a single mother due to his “father declaring himself to be an openly gay man in San Francisco” (Gilbert, 2008, p. 14). What was not visible to fans was the psychopathology that existed within the mind of O.J. Simpson. O.J. Simpson meets the criteria for the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder (DSM 301.81) and Antisocial Personality Disorder (DSM 301.7) (American Psychiatric Association (APA), 2000). The Narcissistic Personality Disorder may have been a contributing factor in the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown-Simpson. Society watched as O.J. Simpson's trial unfolded “as the first trial of the digital century” (Lewis, 1995). Viewers became the most media exposed and most information savvy spectators of any criminal trial in the history of the United States. Division among viewers became evident as groups differed in their opinions of guilt or innocence seemingly along racial lines (Gilbert, 2008).

There is no question that O.J. Simpson was successful both on the football field and in front on the camera. O.J. was awarded the Heisman Trophy in 1968 for being the most outstanding college football player of the year and was subsequently drafted into the National Football League (NFL) in the first draft. O.J. went on to play 11 seasons as a running back in the NFL and was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame in 1985 (National Football League Enterprises, n.d.). His football popularity led to a career in television and cinema that he started by portraying a student in a 1968 episode of Dragnet. He appeared in 28 television and movie roles, which included the popular mini-series, Roots. O.J. was a television Executive Producer and his last acting role was in Naked Gun 33 1/3:The Final Insult, in 1994(Internet Movie Database, 2008). O.J. Simpson's accomplishments on the field and on the set combined to create a persona in the public eye who was idolized and adored.

The public did not have the opportunity to observe O.J.'s childhood Mike Gilbert, was O.J. Simpson's former sports agent and friend and in his book, How I Helped O.J. Get Away With Murder, wrote that O.J. grew up “in a rough neighborhood, Potrero Hill in San Francisco,” where he ran with street gangs and “had numerous run-ins with the police as a teen.” Eunice Simpson, a single mother raised O.J. after his father came out as an openly gay man and remained in the neighborhood (Gilbert, 2008). O.J. also had rickets, a disease of malnutrition, and had to walk around for hours every day in iron braces for his skinny bowlegs (Gilbert, 2008). Gilbert states that O.J. came from an environment of strong, churchgoing, disciplinary women. “He both depended upon and raged against women's power. His greatest terror was to be abandoned” (Gilbert, 2008, p. 14).

When O.J. Simpson met Nicole Brown, he was unhappy in his marriage to his first wife, Marguerite, who was pregnant with their third child. O.J. claimed that Marguerite had tricked him with that pregnancy and Gilbert describes these beliefs as being indicative of O.J. Simpson's immaturity and narcissism (Gilbert, 2008, p. 102). It was reported that when Marguerite was married to O.J. she made calls to the police and was frequently observed with bruises and wearing sunglasses regardless of the lighting conditions (Gilbert, 2008, p. 102). Gilbert writes that it took him many years to realize that O.J. Simpson had no empathy for any other human being. Gilbert states that in the years after Nicole Brown Simpson's death, he never “once heard O.J. express grief over her death, or empathy for her suffering or horror over what happened to her” (Gilbert, 2008). Mike Gilbert writes that he did hear O.J. tell jokes about Nicole's death. One time in jail, O.J. asked Mike Gilbert to check the horoscope, and as he did so, O.J. stated to Mike, “Check Taurus. Does it say "Hey, I"m dead'?” Nicole Brown Simpson was a Taurus (Gilbert, 2008). By lacking empathy, having a grandiose sense of self-importance, requiring excessive admiration, being interpersonally exploitative, and showing arrogant and haughty behaviors, O.J. meets the criteria for Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD). There are numerous examples of O.J. Simpson's “fantasies of unlimited success, power, brilliance, beauty or ideal love” (APA, 2000, p. 714), within the pages of Mike Gilbert's book, which support the diagnosis of NPD.

The diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder (ASPD) has high validity in the case of O.J. Simpson. The early symptoms are not available but the signs are clearly evident. The evidence of Conduct Disorder before age 15 is demonstrated by O.J. having participated in the activities of street gangs and it is evident that the psychopathology of Antisocial Personality Disorder was in place when it is reputed that O.J. developed his great running and visualization skills when he had to run through gunfire from young people in the street. The diagnostic criteria that O.J. Simpson appears to meet for a diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder are: “failure to conform to social norms with respect to lawful behaviors as indicated by repeatedly performing acts that are grounds for arrest; irritability and aggressiveness, as indicated by repeated physical fights or assaults; and lack of remorse, as indicated by being indifferent to or rationalizing having hurt, mistreated, or stolen from another” (APA, 2000, p. 706). Committing the crime of domestic violence against his first wife and then against Nicole Brown Simpson and demonstrating lack of remorse and indifference are consistent with the diagnosis of Antisocial Personality Disorder.

Both the diagnosis of Narcissistic Personality Disorder and Antisocial Personality Disorder are categorized as Cluster B Personality Disorders; “Individuals with these disorders often appear dramatic, emotional, or erratic” (APA, 2000, p. 685). Maxem & Ward also write that few patients with NPD become psychotic but they can and do undergo brief psychotic episodes (Maxem & Ward, 1995, p. 401). On the night that O.J. Simpson murdered Nicole Brown Simpson, he may have been undergoing a psychotic episode triggered by the circumstances described in Michael Gilbert's version of the events described in his book. Gilbert very clearly quotes what can be described as a veiled confession by O.J. Simpson that he killed Nicole.

The societal impact of the case against O.J. Simpson is an academic one at best. What became clearly evident to individuals experiencing the drama unfold in the courtroom via live television coverage, 24 hour news coverage on CNN, Internet sites, magazine coverage, daily newspaper accounts, and radio coverage, is that they had more information available to them regarding this case than any other case in world history. At the time of the trial, the media referred to the case as “The Trial of the Century” (Lewis, 1995). The trial was in fact “the first trial of the digital century” (Lewis, 1995). The massive coverage of the trial opened dialogue regarding race relations in America, and though many individuals became polarized on the question of O.J. Simpson's innocence or guilt, frequently along racial allegiances, an awareness of the state of racial affairs in the nation was up for discussion. The artist, Colin Quashie, expressed the tensions between the races over the O.J. Simpson verdict in a very irreverent manner by creating a coloring book. In it he writes “O.J. Simpson was awarded many trophies during his career. His favorites were the Heisman and Nicole Brown” (Quashi, 2008).

O.J. Simpson very nearly symbolized what it meant to achieve the American dream. Simpson did not outgrow his personal roots, which took hold during his youth on the streets of San Francisco. The psychopathology of NPD is difficult to treat; ASPD has no known treatment. O.J. Simpson did seek help for what may have been depression. He was reportedly being treated with Prozac at the time that Nicole was murdered (Gilbert, 2008). His Dream Team Defense, the best attorneys that money could buy, typified what an individual with NPD would require to represent him. In the case of O.J. Simpson the tactic worked. O.J. Simpson was found not guilty of the murders of both Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Simpson has a destiny of having to live with himself, undiagnosed, as the world is awaiting his pending trial for a robbery in Las Vegas. The trial is set for September 2008.

Dreams

What do you think about dreams?

Would you agree with the philosophers that said dreams are messages from the soul knocking at the consciousness and are necessary for emotional stability? It is said that dreams are a part of our lives from the day we were born and will continue until death. They are said to be very personal "movies" that had their originate in the soul and are symbolic images that need to be translated and interpreted if we want to understand their meanings correctly. A dream may solve a problem or often times it has no relation to the problem. Interpreting a dream means that we take the whole person seriously not just the active conscious person, but the passive person whose unconscious emotional life finds expression in dreams.

History Of Dreams

Dreams have been with us for ages. As early as the 4000 years papyrus roll now in the London Museum can attest to it. Many wise men associated meaning to them. There are records of dreams in the bible. Joseph while in prison met the baker and the butler who dreamt and Joseph interpreted the dreams. one would die the other would get back his Job. When Pharaoh dreamed about fat cows and the fat meager cows Joseph again interpreted them. Seven years of plenty, seven years of Famine. The good in this was because of the accurate interpretation Egypt was able to store enough grains for the time of famine and was able to feed many other countries. Then there was Daniel who interpreted king Nebuchanezzar dream of the big image. According to Daniel's interpretation the different metals that made up this image represented the different kingdoms which would rule the world. If we follow clearly we are now in the feet and toes made of iron and clay. They shall not cleave together and so we cannot have world peace because the image was a prophetic message, Jacob also had a dream of a ladder reach heaven and angels descending and ascending, Peter also in the New Testament had dreams of a skeet with all types of creatures that he was invited to eat.. So there you have it dreams have a history that goes way back.

Dream Psychology and Interpretations

Many individuals such as Wolfgang Van Goethe have tried studying dreams and later they were used in psychology. Sigmund Freud 1856-1936 believed dream was a way of expressing repressed sexual desires. Alfred Alder 1875-1937 saw dream as a desire for power and recognition enacted .C.G. Jung 1875-1961 a Swiss psychiatrist started putting symbols to dreams when he study into its universality . He came up with the collective unconscious theory .He said dream symbols are ancient ways of the archetypal human image. His theory enlarged the meaning and stated they could be seen as alerts to future events and warnings of evil or harm lurking

Dreams and Health

Scientific research has proven that everyone dream every night and if possible every hour but many do not know. They are said to be essential for our emotional wellbeing. Any human deprived of dream for long periods will become ill. In a research with two groups of like individuals was conducted and it was observed that the ones who were allowed to sleep and dream were more relaxed, stabled and were able to deal with every day stress. The ones whose sleep was disturbed every time the equipment recorded that they were going into a dream were nervous, irritable and were not able to manage every day stress.

The phenomenon of dream will continue to amaze ,the human soul is so profound and deep. The experience of our dream can convince us of our innate tendency and hidden power. Without paying attention to our dreams this power may remain unknown.

There are some known and unknown factors but what we do know is we need dreams to remain emotional healthy. They always bring about relief in our emotional life because they release built up tensions, conflicts, feeling and urges dissipating them and restore emotional calm.

Message of the Soul

Current thought on dreams is that they reconnect. The physic of individuals is made up of 3 parts the id, ego and the super ego. The ide= unconscious ego=conscious. Superego=conscience
The ego is the conscious part that determines through feeling and action. The part where we repress all negative feeling e.g. disappointment, negative and bad experience. These may be past or childish memories. However these negative experiences resurface in the unconscious as dreams. They do not only hold negative things but positive stimulus for important goals in life e.g. creativity and innate talent. These are then transformed into positive gifts to conscious everyday life.

Dreams Interpretations

Dreams can teach us who we are. Dream images from the depth of our soul are not only expression of desires and hopes but are hints of prophetic messages. They can help resolve problems. Friedrich A.K.V. Stradonitz gave credit to a constantly recurring dream for the structure of benzoic 1865. It is said Mozart had similar experiences.

Having read this article I go back and ask the question again. What do you now think of dreams?

How to Get Rid of Psychological Energy Drains?

Ask yourself the following questions:

Does someone in your life offer judgment-free emotional support? This means a person who makes you feel positive about yourself rather than a person who points out your flaws or attacks your choices

Do some people in your life drain your energy and reserves? These are people who always seem to be in crisis and suck up large amounts of “free therapy” time from you but never seem to be there for you. These can also be people who criticize you and make you feel negative and hopeless instead of positive and optimistic.

Do you have unresolved conflicts with family members or friends? These unresolved feelings can drain your energy and focus, as we tend to obsess over the conflict Do you feel your friends are really only acquaintances? Do you lack truly intimate friendships?

Do you feel a void in your life because there is an absence of a romantic partner?

Are you in a romantic or sexual relationship that you need to end, but you have been avoiding action?

Are you in a relationship that compromises your values?

Is there a phone call you need to make, but are avoiding, that is causing you stress and anxiety?

Does someone in your life continuously break commitments or plans, so you are constantly rescheduling?

Energy drains can also come from unmet needs in your home environment. Do you have broken appliances, a car in need of repairs, a wardrobe you hate, cluttered closets and rooms, or even ugly surroundings? Living in a home that is not decorated in a way that pleases you makes you feel as though you don't want to be there. Plants, fresh paint, covers for ugly furniture, and a few beautiful prints or posters on the wall often make the difference between barren and cozy surroundings. See the section on Self-Care for more on the little things in life that make huge differences in your stress quotient.

Other energy drains come from procrastinating and overbooking yourself. We will procrastinate over things we really don't want to do-such as paying taxes. We overbook ourselves when we're afraid of saying no. Every article and book on stress management has these three trite words of advice: Just say no. The problem is, few people will ever say that. Instead of “No,” try, “Let me check my schedule and see if I'm already committed.” Then you can say, “Sorry, it looks like I'm committed elsewhere,” or if the request is for you to complete a task, “I've got a deadline on that date for something equally important.” Finally, simply doing too much and expecting too much from ourselves drains our energies. When possible, hire someone to do the things you can't or don't want to do. When you're overworked at the office, your employer may allow you to subcontract one or two projects to a freelancer.

If you don't think your employer will pay for the freelancer, have you considered subbing out the dreaded task on the sly and paying for it out of your own pocket? The job security, perceived good performance, and weight off your shoulders may be worth a couple of hundred bucks. The same principle applies at home. Consider hiring someone to do these chores that many people dread:

Cleaning your house or apartment

Decluttering your house by going through closets, filing papers, and so on

Organizing your tax receipts

Gardening or taking care of your lawn

Five (Slightly Facetious) Ways To Be Happy

Who doesn't get in a funk every now and then? Especially if you live in place that happens to pour buckets of rain for weeks on end. Or even if you don't, sadness is a part of life sometimes. Everyday can't be sunny. However, I am not qualified to remark upon sadness. I am not qualified to comment upon happiness either, but I'll try anyway. Whenever I become unhappy, “about a problem like Maria”, or any other issue, I always try to do the following.

I sing as though my life was a musical.

It's not that my voice would ever be considered for any production, never mind a Hammerstein, instead I sing because it's so terrible, it makes me laugh. I make up lyrics about whatever is drawing me into a funk, or I just warble off a few bars of West Side Story: “I feel pretty, oh so pretty….” Astonishingly, five minutes into some form of musical rendition, I realize how goofy and silly my problem was. I mean really, who cares about the fact that I'd rather be a (starving) aspiring writer than put my law degree to good use to earn at least fifty grand a year??

I pray and I pray hard.

I once read, a while back, that God is there to listen no matter what. No complaint is too irrelevant or insignificant, the book assured me. Well, once the floodgates were opened, there was no turning back. Whether it's a remark about a new sweater I'd been eyeing and wanting, or a grumble about the peanuts in my salad that I specifically requested not to appear, I talked to God about it. Not always out loud, but certainly always in my heart. And when I do get a chance to escape prying eyes and curious ears, there is no hesitation in the stream of emotions I pour out to him. He's the best therapist I've ever come across. Best of all, not only is he available 24 - 7, he's also 100% free.

I get active.

Reese Witherspoon in character as a pink-loving law student in the sleeper hit Legally Blonde remarked at some point in the movie that “exercise gives you endorphins, endorphins make you happy, and happy people just don't go around killing other people.” This is a true and poignant statement. Are you feeling sad? Are you feeling upset? Then get up off your butt and get outside. Even if you are only walking Fifi around the block or strolling to your nearest grocery store to grab some more Chunky Monkey, just GO. I promise if you exercise regularly in a fun manner (torture by treadmill is not really included in this category), you will have fun. You will also forget about whatever it was making you “not-fun”.

Go try something new.

The saying “variety is the spice of life” is not only trite, but also an altruism. Want to shake the blues? They run at the mere thought of your mind being occupied with something other than the doldrums! Go learn how to throw raku pottery, or how to shake up the dance floor with rumba moves, or even how to build the best spice rack. Go with whatever tickles your fancy.

Finally, learn to enjoy your own company.

No one knows you better than yourself. No one spends as much time with you as you. It's best to become well acquainted with someone who is closer to you than even your own shadow. Who knows you might even learn to love yourself, and when that happens, doldrums, blues, funks, grumbles, and the mean reds will be less frequent.

If all else fails, revert back to number 1 and sing after me: “I feel so charming, oh so charming….”

Choose the Best Psychotherapy for You

Psychotherapy is a long and expensive enterprise, and is important for a person who wants to join treatment to know the options she has before investing time and money.

Psi is the symbol of Psychology

Psychology has many theories, each one of them with its own approach. When choosing a Psychologist, you must know if the theory he works with is the best one for you. When thinking in psychological treatment, you must consider which approach you feel better with, and which approach is better for your condition. In this article, I will present the most popular ones and the way they treat the patient.

The Thinker, by August Rodin

Psychoanalysis

That one is the closest to what Freud has created a hundred years ago, and is very popular in many countries, although, it is also the more expensive one. In Psychoanalysis, the Psychoanalyst believes that most of the problems come from childhood situations and repressions. The Psychoanalyst speaks very little during sessions, and his work consists mostly in analyzing the patient's internal thoughts. He will do it evoking dreams, childhood memories and using techniques as free association. It's a long treatment and is very good for reaching self knowledge.

Sigmund Freud

Gestalt Therapy

It focuses on the present situation of the patient. A person can be understood only in the context she lives and in the interactions she makes. It emphasizes personal responsibility. The psychotherapist encourages the client to express his feelings.

Behavioral Treatment

It is appropriate for people who want to get rid of a very specific symptom. It uses techniques as punishment, reinforcement and systematic desensibilization, to help the patient overcoming phobias, fears and undesirable behaviors.

Cognitive Treatment

It works with the idea that every symptom comes from inadequate thoughts that disturb the patient. In this kind of therapy, the psychotherapist will help the patient to manipulate and give new meanings to the dysfunctional thoughts.

Psychodynamics

It's psychoanalysis oriented, but not so long. In that treatment, the psychotherapist and the client agree before the beginning of treatment what is their goal together. The psychotherapist will try to work old conflicts with the patient.

Interpersonal

It is better for people who are going through a difficult time in life, as divorce, the death of a loved one or even living an atypical experience, as a new unplanned pregnancy. In that approach, the therapist usually doesn't treat old issues.

Systemic Therapy

This is most used for families, but is also an option of individual therapy. The main idea in systemic therapy is that everyone lives among others, and the relations between people define them. Symptoms in a person reflect the symptom of a sick system. For example: when the son develops destructive behavior, it is possible that it is a way to release the tension in the system caused by the unhappiness of the parents' marriage.

Psychodrama

It believes that the patient's issues can be treated in a theatrical form. It's a group therapy where everyone plays roles from memories and issues of each of the therapy members. It has a king of stage and the director is the psychotherapist.

Those are just some of the approaches. There are many more. Be sure to research well before choosing a therapy for you. It's a very important decision.

Smarter Than Bill Gates

I.Q. scores have been measured since 1916, when Alfred Binet developed his intelligence scale. He graduated the scale in the following way:

IQ Scores

130+ Very superior

120+ Superior

110+ Above average

99+ Average

80+ Below average

70+ Borderline

Less than 70 Extremely low.

Items included in IQ tests range from spatial awareness where you have to match patterns, to number sequences, and words. There is a free IQ testing site online.

IQ tests used to be standardized but now they are designed by many different organizations in an attempt to measure certain qualities in candidates. For example, Mensa, the High IQ Society, sets its own test which is very difficult in parts. One example of a Mensa question:

Take these letters:

C E I L M E R S S

Form two different 8 letter words from these letters. Each word must use all the letters.

Intelligence and personality have been combined to give sten and z-scores. These are often used by companies who want to recruit staff with particular traits and abilities.

Some very famous celebrities are know for their extremely high IQ level.

Bill Gates: Genius

Madonna 140

Al Gore 140

Hugh Hefner 152

Carol Vorderman 154

Bill Gates 160

Jill St. John 162

Jill St. John who claims the highest score on this list was a major American film actress during the 1960's and 1970's. Jill was admitted to the University of California at the age of 14.

Psychologists have estimated the IQ scores that some famous historical figures might have attained. This was done by looking at their work and their ideas and the way they put them together.

Leonardo da Vinci: Smarter than Bill Gates

George Washington 118

Napoleon Bonaparte 145

Albert Einstein 160

Charles Dickens 180

Michelangelo 180

Leonardo da Vinci 220

Leonardo da Vinci earns that massive score for his art but also for his helicopter concept . His solar power diagrams, calculator plans, and studies of plate techtonics. He had none of the modern day scientific equipment and he was way ahead of his time.

Eight Explanations for Why We Dream

I just remember that my dreams when I was younger appear to be more vivid than what they are now. Upon reaching adulthood, my dreams started to wane and at best I could not recall any dream upon waking up.

According to experts, in a typical lifespan, humans spend a total of six years dreaming. There is yet no consensus or established explanation why we dream. That is why, there are theories that try to explain this phenomenon.

I gathered some of these theories and came up with eight explanations why we dream:

Adler's Theory. Dreams were a way of addressing our insecurities. In a dream we can safely face things that would otherwise scare us. We can try out strategies for overcoming our shortcomings or simply compensate for them via wish-fulfillment.

Freud's Theory. Freud believes that we dream mainly because we want to fulfill our wishes. In other words, we dream mainly to fulfill our desires.

Jung's Theory. He suggested that dreams may compensate for one-sided attitudes held in waking consciousness.

Hartmann's Theory. Dreams, he said, function like psychotherapy. What someone cannot do during waking life, he tries to fulfill in his dreams.

Griffen's Theory. Dreams provide a venue to satisfy an emotional expectation. This lowers stress on the dreamer.

Hobson and McCarley's Theory. Dreams were simply the result of random electrical brain impulses that pulled imagery from traces of experience. Our brain tries to make sense of what these imageries mean and our mind creates stories out of it.

Hall's Theory. He argued that a dream was simply a thought or sequence of thoughts. Dream images are the dreamer's own personal construct.

Cayce Theory. More inclined on the spiritual explanations, he claimed that through dreaming, people are given access to their spirit. Well, these dream theories appear to point out that dreaming is a personal thing. Each one has a unique dream not dreamt by anybody else. And I would suggest that the best explanation to our dreams should come from ourselves.

Besides, we cannot dwell on our dreams. We have to face our everyday realities. If you dream good, enjoy it. If not, wake up!

What Does Your Handwriting Say About You?

Emoticons and personalized signatures are now an integral part of our communication. Our every emotion and mood can be effectively conveyed with the use of colours, fonts and icons. All these tools are used for conscious projection of our personality.

Handwriting belongs to this same family of communication means. It displays our personality traits through various factors such as size, slant, zones, margin size, pressure and distinctive letter formations.

Have you ever noticed how you reacted to a friend's writing on a birthday card? Was the script large, slanting rightwards, perhaps colourful? Maybe this friend also used several exclamations and doodles to make it look more interesting. Without even knowing it, you would have smiled to yourself and thought how outgoing and fun-loving this friend was.

Now let us examine another imaginary card, from a more serious-minded friend. Is the lettering smaller in size? Evenly spaced, neat and legible? Do the letters appear upright, following an imaginary, straight baseline? Here, you may have instantly recalled this friend's intelligence, focus and independence.

You may have just realized how each of us analyzes handwriting to some extent or the other. The professional graphologist takes this intuitive response to a greater level. Extensive study, measurement and analysis of numerous factors of handwriting help in building up a comprehensive personality profile of the writer.

If you would like to get a better understanding of how this concept works, consider this: Imagine a person walking into a party. Let this person be tastefully dressed in the trendiest clothes, confident and impressive. Suppose this person smiles at everyone, but shortly joins up with her clique of close friends. She may pass witty comments and laugh engagingly at others' jokes. What kind of writing do you think this person would have? Wouldn't it surprise you if you were told that she has an untidy scrawl, where the words run into one another, presenting an overall picture of messy, confused smudges? It is more likely that you are picturing a neat, classy script, slanting forward moderately, with lots of “garlands” or curves joining the letters together. Correct? This is because at some subconscious level, you may have already noticed the “consistency” of a person's personality. Leaving aside deliberate pretensions, a person tends to project the same personality through all means of communication. The way in which he approaches his spatial area (as the room in the above example) is very akin to way he approaches a blank piece of paper.

The margins, word and letter spacing represent “boundaries”. A narrow left margin may indicate a person who is attached to his past. Narrow right margins would show an eagerness to embrace the future.

The letters themselves are divided into three “zones”. The upper zone corresponds to the “spirit” and intellectual aspects, the middle zone to the “mind”, day-to-day and emotional aspects while the lower zone corresponds to the “body', physical drives and vitality.

Have you noticed how your boyfriend joins his letters? Do his letter connectors, beginning and ending strokes appear cup shaped, curved at the bottom and open at the top? If they do, then you are in luck. These “Garlands” are indicative of warm, sentimental and caring people. If his writing appears predominantly thread-like, unwinding or tapering towards the end of letters and words, then you better be careful. He is more likely to be evasive and it will be harder to get him to make any firm commitments.

The slant of the writing is indicative of how he/she prefers to interact with the world. Left slanting writing indicates a more reserved or introverted nature. Right slanting writing shows a more outgoing or extrovert nature. Upright writing usually displays an independent personality.

Space between letters indicates extent of thrift and tension. Space between words shows how the person handles “distance” with others. For example, well spaced writing indicates someone who respects others' space and privacy. Space between lines displays the sense of organization.

Pressure measures vitality and physical strength. It is influenced by the health, energy and emotional state of the writer and can change from sample to sample.

The body of a writing sample is more representative of a person, than his signature. The signature is his conscious projection to the world and is the image he would like the world to have of him. Age, sex, gender, left or right-handedness and nationality cannot be determined from handwriting. A graphologist should be given this information beforehand. Handwriting analysis is not a fortune-telling tool. It does not predict your future. Handwriting analysis helps to understand the writer's personality with a greater depth and clarity. This understanding can then be used for self-improvement, personality development, vocational guidance, relationship counselling, etc... Some companies choose to use handwriting analysis as a recruitment tool. It can be used to gauge the extent to which the applicant's traits match those required of the job profile.

It is important to remember that graphology is an extensive science, requiring some serious study. In some ways, it is also an art, as it is important to take a holistic approach to the writing. The overall nature of the writing must be taken into account, before drawing any conclusions. Matching traits to a single “observation” or “sign” can be misleading.

However, the next time you look at a piece of writing, you will probably pay greater attention and gain more insights into the writer's personality.

Four Ways To Help Children Cope With Emotion

Are you looking for some information on helping your children cope with their emotion? Here's my personal and work experience on this topic. Some parents find it challenging to help their children to cope with their emotion. The following ways may help your children cope with their emotion:

Playing Games

You may introduce emotions e.g. happy, sad, upset, disappointed, hurt, sad, excited, angry, scared and so on to your children. When they know the different names of emotion, it helps them to identify emotion.
You can design a simple feeling wheel game to teach them some basic feelings. Then, you and your children can take turn to throw the dice and reach one of the feelings.

Game One

It uses non-verbal expression facial express and gesture to express feelings.

Game Two

It helps a child understand his or her feelings, the situations that trigger those feelings. For example, I feel sad (or other feelings) when my brother hurts me.

Game Three

It helps to find ways to cope with different feelings. For example, when I feel sad, I shall talk to my mother or hug my teddy bear. Most children love to play this game. It helps them to express their feelings and find some ways of coping with them. Adults shall play along to help children learn to cope with their emotions.

Drawing

It is a good way to encourage your children to express their feelings through drawing. It is safe and creates a way to help children release their emotion. After drawing, they have released most of their emotion and energy. When they have slowly calmed down, you can start to process with them about their feelings. You may ask them what was happening and practise attending, listening and responding skills.

Talking

Some of the children are more verbal and they may prefer to talk about the incident and feelings. You may use the rapport building, attending, listening and responding skills to help you children. Be an encouraging and active listener. If parents are critical or judgmental, it may affect their relationship with their children.

Role Play and Modeling

Some children prefer more indirect way of cope with their emotion. Role-play is the best way to help them. You can play their building blocks with people or animals. You invite your children to act out certain situation or emotion that your children may find it hard to handle.

Through role-play, you can introduce and show different emotion coping strategies, like relaxing skills, counting exercise, breathing exercise and distraction techniques. Your children can practise different emotional coping strategies through role-play. This way may be creative and non-intrusive for the children.

In conclusion, playing games, drawing, talking and role-playing are the creative and effective ways to help your children cope with their emotions. I hope that you've earned a wealth of knowledge on how to help children cope with their emotion. I wish that you would put the knowledge into practice and share your experience with others.
