Cool Animal Facts

We have all been fascinated by the animals we see for the first time and for some of us, we are still in awe of the additional information we learn about these animals.

As kids, we have been very fond of going to the nearest zoo where we are exposed to a different world where the ferocious and tame animals co-exist with people. The sight of unfamiliar and common animals in their most primal nature is a sight to behold especially for children because they are always in awe of new and interesting things. For sure, we as kids have enjoyed looking at a lion, snake, elephant, orangutans, and giraffes for the very first time and marveled at how beautiful they are from the way they are illustrated in science books.

But our fascination with such animals does not end when we grow up. There are still a lot of things we learn about these creatures that surprise us up to now. Here are some interesting trivia about our favorite animals:

  • 75% of wild birds die even before they reach their first birthdays
  • Dolphins do sleep too. However, they sleep with half of their brain awake so that they are always “half-asleep, half-awake”

  • Hippopotamuses secrete red sweat whenever they are upset
  • Hippos have stomachs that are ten-feet long

  • Mosquitoes, like humans, shiver whenever they feel cold
  • Hippos are the animals that can be considered “bullet-proof” because their skin is 1 ½ inch thick
  • Sharks do not get sick as they are immune to diseases

  • Dolphins are the second most intelligent animals. They can be trained to perform certain tricks
  • In the United States, cats and not dogs are the most common pets
  • Dolphins, which are considered mammals more than a fish, can actually drown had it not been for their tails which automatically jerk to keep them afloat
  • The Philippine tarsiers are sensitive to stress. They are not used to presence of humans and once they feel stressed out, they kill themselves
  • The tarsier can turn its head 180 degrees which enables them to see their surroundings better

  • Bats always turn left when exiting a cave

  • Bees would have to pollinate up to 4,000 flowers to produce a spoonful of honey
