Is there any Justice in the world today?
Hundreds of people every year are wrongly convicted of crimes simply because they are difficult cases to prove and the lawyers cannot be bothered to fight them unless they are receiving a large pay packet in return. Solicitors receiving payment from Legal Aid are subsequently pushing their "Legal Aid" clients to plead guilty against their will because it will be much easier for them to move onto the next case providing "The Big Bucks"!
How do we help the victims of this type of situation?
What can we do for those victims who are talked into pleading guilty for the best even though there is no actual concrete evidence for a conviction to be made without this guilty plea?
My brother Nathaniel Parchment , Born 22 August 1984 was this year talked into making a guilty plea by his solicitor against his will. Suffering from depression and schizophrenia, accused of rape, highly medicated resulting with an uncontrollable shake to his left hand and leg and unable to comprehend the seriousness of this allegation, he was told it was for the best to just plead guilty because all the evidence was against him and it would look better on him than pleading not guilty because the chances the jury would find him not guilty were very slim.
Nathaniel kept on saying he didn't want to plead guilty because he had not raped anyone but after weeks of coercing he agreed reluctantly because he said “no one believed him anyway and that there was no point in fighting, he just has to do the time and ride through it.”
He pleaded guilty on the 8 th July 2008 and on the 15 th August he was sentenced to 5 years in jail, to become a registerd sex offender for the rest of his life with 10% taken off his sentence for the guilty plea - IS THIS JUSTICE? He has now been returned to jail, put on the hospital Wing and still on medication serving this sentence. A story was wrote about him in Telegraph and Argus which not only twisted facts but also added their own version of events making him out to be violent when in fact after reading signed statements throughout the trial there was in fact no violence at all.
This treatment of a sane, fit and well human being is unjust but to treat a mentally unstable person this way is nothing more than In-Humane!
I would like to find a lawyer who will re-look at the evidence and see if we have the chance to appeal. Right now that is all I want but in saying that, I hope that an appeal and a re-trial will follow. A Trial where my brother gets the treatment he deserves, a chance to tell the truth in front of a jury and let them decide after going through all the evidence with a fine tooth comb if there is enough evidence to convict him of rape because although my brother is ill, I don't believe there is, but who am I and what can I do?
All I ask from you the reader is to read this article and pass it on. I don't care how long it takes I would just like to find a lawyer with a passion for justice, a passion for people to be treated fairly to speak to me and give me some advice so that can take the next step to help my brother.
