Must Have Halloween Classics

Top ten Halloween songs, my personal favorites. Do any of these songs fall into your personal top ten?

  1. Monster Mash- Bobby "Boris" Picket 1962- I can't remember a Halloween without hearing this song! Even today, has anyone not heard this song? Young and Old alike will enjoy imitating the ghoulish voice in this song. Funny, it came out the same year I was born! This is my personal all time fave halloween song!
  2. Thriller- Michael Jackson 1984- How can we think of Halloween without mentioning Thriller? An instant classic, Michael Jackson brought to life his werewolf and a brand new benchmark for music videos!
  3. Time Warp-Cast 1975 (from the movie Rocky Horror Picture Show)-Well, it is that time of year again! If you check your local Theaters, you may just find that at midnight on a Saturday, they are showing the Cult Classic Rocky Horror Picture Show. The show stars Tim Curry, Susan Serandon and Barry Bostwick. There is a guest appearance by Meatloaf as well. If you have never seen the movie, you cannot just rent the video! You must see it with a live audience! Oh, and bring your props! (Toast, Rice, newspaper, water sprayer, just to name a few!) Time Warp is a fun kind of "alley cat" song that anyone can do! Just follow along with the lyrics!
  4. GhostBusters - Ray Parker, Jr. 1984 (from the movie of the same name)-- If you have ever asked the question, "Who you gonna call?", you will probably get the answer, "GhostBusters!"! This funny movie was written by (and stars) Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis. The film also stars comedian Bill Murray and Sigourney Weaver. The song, with its upbeat tempo, is one of the traditional Halloween songs of its time!
  5. Bad Moon Rising- Creedence Clearwater Revival (CCR) 1981 (from the movie American Werewolf in London) - Starring David Naughton and Griffon Dunne, Jack and David have the unfortunate experience of getting stuck in the moors of England. David gets bitten by a werewolf and that's when the fun starts! It was scary (for its time) and, coupled with the comedy, made me want to see it again. Bad Moon Rising is a must for a Halloween top ten list!
  6. I Put a Spell on You- Animals 1965 (sung by Bette Midler in the 1993 Disney movie Hocus Pocus) -- Also starring Sarah Jessica Parker and Kathy Najimy, this is a fun Halloween movie about 3 sister witches brought back to life that put a spell on the whole town of Salem in order to stay 'alive'. With its eerie, haunting, hypnotic lyrics, the song represents the spell that Winnie (Bette Midler) puts on the town.
  7. Love Potion #9- The Clovers 1959 -- In 1992, the movie of the same name, starring Sandra Bullock and Tate Donovan told the story of this hit song. About a couple of scientists who see a gypsy to get a potion that makes the opposite sex fall in love with them, it reminds me of the old adage, "Be careful what you wish"!!
  8. Dark Lady - Cher 1975 - Cher's intoxicating voice brings to life the story of a fortune teller who describes a lover's affair. You can see videos of this song on You Tube if you like. Passion, heartbreak and revenge are all rolled up in this song.
  9. Devil Went Down to Georgia - Charlie Daniels Band 1979- A toe tappin', hand clappin', heart pumpin' fiddlin' challenge between a young, daring fiddler and the Devil! Would you bet your soul against your talent?
  10. Flying Purple People Eater - Sheb Wooley 1958 - Last but not least, this funny, silly song about a purple people eater that comes to earth and becomes a rock star! I have always wondered though, is he a Purple alien that eats people, or is he an alien that eats purple people? At any rate, he is now a "pigeon toed, rock and roll pretty little people eater -- What a sight to see!"
