Understanding Casino Slot Machines 101

The secrets of the slots, and how you can try to beat the odds and win more money.

Do you occasionally enjoy a trip to the casino to try your luck? Do you know how the machines work, and what the odds are of your winning?

Each machine is ruled by a computer chip, and each spin is random. The odds are programmed into the chip so that the stops of the chip correspond to the stops on the machine reel. This is what determines the chances of your machine stopping on any given symbol combination or the jackpot. Your chances for winning a large jackpot are a lot lower than winning a smaller payout.

The machine’s RNG (random number generator) determines the payout percentage. Regulation laws stipulate that there is a minimum payout for each machine, and they are closely regulated. Not all machines are the same. Some machines have a higher payout schedule than others and some, a lower one. One machine may payout 10 coins on a 3-coin bet, while another may payout 15 for the same bet. The casinos move the machines around all the time, which is unfortunate for those who have a favorite machine on one trip. They may not find it the next time.

The machine you decide to play and the amount of your bet dictates your odds. The machines with the largest jackpots have a greater number of stops which decreases your odds of winning. The amount of actual stops on the reels do not dictate your odds of hitting a winning combination, as most people think. The more coins you bet, the better your odds and payout. Your odds are better with the video machines, because they have multiple pay lines, and bonus rounds where you get free spins, which means more money.

There are straight slots and progressive slots. The straight slots are stand-alone machines that payout according to a predetermined payout schedule, paying the same amount each time a particular combination is hit. The progressive slots are connected, by a network, to other machines that are all tied together and payout according to the amount that has accumulated since the last payout.

If you are planning a trip to the casino, go with a predetermined amount of cash, and do not visit the ATM after this money runs out. If you put $20.00 into a machine and win at least double that amount, cash out and put in another $20. Always look for the best payout, and bet the maximum that you can afford. Your payout will be greater than if you bet the minimum. Choose a machine that has “bonus rounds”. You stand to make more money on those rather than the ones that don’t.

Happy Betting!
