Worst Hands in Texas Hold 'Em

A look at some of the weakest starting hands in hold 'em poker.

The worst hands in Texas hold em poker are those hands that will give the player few or any opportunities in the round. Looking through these hands should provide a good guide as to when to fold early, preferably before the flop.

To begin with, the worst hands in hold em poker generally are two low separate unsuited cards that are not connected in anyway. Even high cards that meet these criteria like Ace and Queen cannot be considered especially brilliant hands; although, certainly not the worst hands a player can get.

However, invariably lower ranked cards that fall into this category are the real stinkers. Let us say, for example, a two and four, two or five etc or alternatively three or five which will not present any real opportunities for the player. Even if they are separated by just a couple of cards, the straight will be still be unlikely and the pairs you might get will be hopeless.

Therefore, with this, the criteria for worst starting hands is filled best by the two and seven unsuited. Widely regarded as the worst starting hand you can be dealt in the game. Sometimes players call it the hammer. Low pairs are the best you can hope for; win with that and you will be lucky!

At any rate, other similar hands like the two and eight do not exactly make for a better opener. The eight gives a weak high card, and the hand offers little prospect on the flop. Again, the best option for any player is to fold early with this hand.

Other bad starting hands are the three an eight, and three and seven. With no chance of a straight, and little chance of anything else, even if you were to pair on the flop with the higher card.

The 6-2 off suit is another hand to avoid. Similar to the 7-3, there is faint hope of a straight on the flop, but that is unlikely. A 6-7 will easily defeat it however, and the hand offers little else for the player.

The 5-9 is also a hand that is not much good. A pair of nines would not be the worst pair in the world, but with a low kicker card it will unlikely bring home the bacon. Mostly, you will lose if you play it.

Those unsuited, unconnected cards that feature a low and high card like two and Ace are also not especially good hands either. While better than the aforementioned, without a reasonably strong kicker the player will be at a disadvantage at the table, especially if the game results in a tiebreaker.

In order, the unsuited 2-7 is the worst, followed by the 2-8 and 3-8, 3-7, 6-2. Aside from those, you can forget about low unsuited hands, like 2-4 and 3-5 also. Even those hands, which might include a high card, mixed with weak are not fantastic, especially if unsuited. Overall, such card combinations make up the worst hands in Texas hold em.
