In the Future, Some People May Have Two Brains

With implants, people may in the future have the equivalent of two brains.

With implants in the brains in the future, people will have what could be considered two brains.  Since biological brains rely on an electrochemical system to encode and remember information, implants will do a better job since we already have solid-state systems that can store a tremendous amount of information.

I find it ironic that over a quarter of a century ago I was telling people at an electronic exhibition down in New York City that solid-state memory systems would eventually replace tapes and disks.  People told me that disks would always store the most information.  I may be proven correct in the future.

With solid-state memories, there could be the exclusion of repetitive information.  That means if you see something 1000 times, it won't be remembered 1000 times.  It will be remembered once and referenced 1000 times.

There will also be a way to download memories into computers for backup just in case something happens to the synthetic brain.  With synthetic nerves and muscles and sometimes entire organs like the drug catalyst and synthetic heart, it is only natural that a synthetic brain should control those things in the body.

With Experiencable Program Units, implants will make it easier for people to have access to EPU programs.  Biojunctions may have to be used to allow the synthetic brain to interface with the organic brain.  For people with brain disorders like Alzheimers, synthetic brains will be needed to replace the parts of the brain that aren't functioning anymore.

In 1974 when I was submitting android plans to the Pentagon, I envisioned two brains for the android.  The body brain would be the larger brain and would control the android.  The brain in the head would allow it to gather information and help the body brain.  Both brains used stacked memory systems that had cores that connected to other connections so that only the parts of the brain or brains that need to be used would be on.

The human brain normally has to be on all the time when a person is awake.  With what I describe as a companion brain, the organic brain could be asleep and the solidstate brain could be at minimal activity.  There will have to be an extra power source since the synthetic brain won't be as efficient as the organic brain.  But it may store more information than an organic brain.  Instead of a cell smaller than a period storing a single bit of information, a synthetic memory cell even smaller will be used.

The synthetic brain will use multiple layers of encoding and decoding to condense memory into as small a space as possible.  Specific encoding and decoding systems will be used to control the synthetic brain.  They will also interface with the organic brain via biojunctions.

Since computers can do calculations faster than organic brains can, people with both organic and synthetic brains will recall things faster.  They will also be able to grasp concepts faster and be "artificial" geniuses.  With certain programs that can be downloaded into the synthetic brain, a person could learn how to play the piano like a concert pianist or speak another language with one download into the synthetic brain.

Since people will want to still have an organic brain so that they will feel human, the synthetic one may be much smaller than the organic one.  But with the ability to condense information and exclude repetitive information, the synthetic brain won't need to be larger than the organic part.  They can be cyborgs and still be human.
