A Legend of the Death of Robin Hood

We have all heard some of the exploits of the "good" outlaw who robbed rich people in order to give alms to poor people. Fewer of us have heard about his death.

Assuming that Robin Hood (Robin Fitzooth) really did exist and that the legends which have grown up around him have some element of truth, let's consider the death of the noted "good" outlaw.

Within West Yorkshire in the United Kingdom and within the private grounds of the Kirklees Estate, one can find a gravestone which is purported to be the marker for the burial site of Robin Hood.

Disregard the fact that the marker is too far from the alleged place of Robin's death, too far for an able bow marksman to have shot an arrow. A more reasonable distance from where Robin supposedly shot an arrow, a distance of from 60 to 80 meters, is where bones were discovered during the 18th century renovations of he Estate. Could those bones have been the remains of the outlaw who robbed from the rich and gave to the poor?

According to many of the local stories, Robin Hood had a quite taxing day and was feeling the need to be "bled" in order to become stronger. He went to his cousin who lived at a priory among some nuns. She had apparently bled him at other times so he trusted her.

His cousin, the Prioress, took him upstairs to a private room, offered him food which he refused, and began the bleeding process. She locked the door when she left the room, perhaps to insure Robin's safety or perhaps because she was involved in a plot to kill him. Robin's number one man, Little John, was in a grove of trees outside, waiting for Robin to recover and join him.

Robin was left alone until the next day. Obviously, he had bled too much and was beyond the point of recovery. He tried to crawl out a window but was too weak to accomplish that feat. He blew on his bugle to get the attention of Little John. Little John broke through the locked door and wanted to burn the Priory down, but Robin would not allow that to happen. Robin asked Little John to help him shoot an arrow. Wherever the arrow fell was to be the burying place for him.

Apparently, more than one arrow was used since the first one fell into a brook which was off the grounds of the Priory. The second arrow is where Robin Hood was buried. The gravesite is marked to this day.
