Common thought has been that in order to improve the grades of inner city children, you have to move them out of the city. While it may be nice for people who live in the more run down parts of the inner city it causes problems for the people in the small towns they tend to move to. Not only do the towns get considerably less smaller as the trend continues the idea that the attitudes and presumably better morals of small town folk will rub off on the implants it does not pan out. Often what the popular targets for this kind of treatment end with are higher rates of crime. Ma Whether or not the above statement is true, moving to a middle class neighborhood will not improve the quality of education for many inner city students.
One recent study however suggest that moving families living in the Inner cities elsewhere will not benefit the inner city children. The researchers followed the path over over 4,200 families that were either given or denied vouchers to move out of poverty stricken neighborhoods. While the schools found behavior problems occurred more frequently in brighter students and boys, they found no significant difference between
The factors that make up for a quality eduction have often been long debated by people trying to improve what is seen as the declining quality of America's educational system. Factors can range from poor quality of eduction, to neighborhood quality, to parental involvement but none seem to get around to mentioning the attitude of the children themselves towards education which often seems to be the core of the issue.
According to Richard D. Kahlenberg, a senior fellow at the Century Foundation, there was a wide body of evidence going back decades that students do better i Middle class neighborhoods, but actual research did not pan out. Moving inner city school students to Middle class areas will not change the students' attitudes towards education. Even the best teacher can not teach someone who does not want to learn, although the people who did the research said that the poor families still had many disadvantages.
Sadly, focusing on economic conditions will not improve the state of America's educational system. Until the root problem of the issue is addressed, moving students around will not cause disadvantage students to get better quality education.
