Seven Steps to Improve Your Reading Skills

Whether you are a troubled reader or someone who wants to expand your boundaries, you can do so by following these seven simple steps.

Reading is an excellent way to pass the time, relax, or expand your reading ability. If you are someone who wants to learn how to do the latter simply follow these seven simple steps.

  1. Read Subjects of Interest

If you read subjects that interest you pictures will be painted in your head and you will be able to follow along better. There is satisfaction in accomplishing something you enjoy. The more you read the more you will begin to enjoy it and it will become a habit.
  2. Read Material At or Beyond Your Level

Reading material that is too easy for you will bore you and cause you to lose interest. Read challenging material that you wont put down after five minutes. Looking up any unknown and use the words often so you don’t forget them. Soon you will be able to take on more difficult content.
  3. Read in Depth:

Reading familiar subjects will allow you to understand better. Reading short articles is okay but reading lengthy books and novels will help you understand and retain more. Change others from time to time.
  4. Listen First

Many great works of literature were written to be read out loud. Listen to books on tape. (I used to do this in High School) You will understand the material easier and you won’t stumble over those tricky words. Hearing the rhythm of someone reading a text will help your own reading.
  5. Get Involved

Good readers allow their mind to wander and paint a picture. Don’t analyze too much, instead just let your mind go and allow what ever wanders into your mind. You do not need to predict or analyze. Just enjoy the book.
  6. Do you Understand?

Reading is often for knowledge but mainly for pleasure. Learn to enjoy your readings without knowing exactly what is going on. Maybe you picture things different in your mind then the author does, and that is okay. Learn to enjoy reading, even while feeling that you do not fully understand.
  7. Read a Lot

Reading often will help keep your mind fresh. Reading sporadically will cause your mind to unmold and forget nearly everything. You will enjoy reading more if you do it more often.

I used to read books more.. now I seem to have less time.. as do so many of us, but we need to find time, because relaxing with a books is good brain stimulation.
