Children of Today: Written by Child of Yesterday

The world of "Chavs".

The infamous ‘Chav' certainly has caught on in the UK. But what is it about the scruffy, un-educated, threatening look that is so appealing? I know that when I was younger I didn't thrive to be on the doll, and my dream TV show to feature on definitely wasn't Jeremy Kyle! I was convinced that one day I would have the perfect family, with good earnings and a lovely home. Why has it all changed?

I'm only 22, and quite old fashioned in my morals - But I came from a fairly rough senior school and seen how easy it is for people to divide in to gangs or think that it is ‘cool' to cause trouble. My opinion (I would love to hear yours too) is that these kids have absolutely nothing to do... I had horses, and outside of school I would be riding or competing. I attended sports clubs, and had an active family - I never had the time or inclination to go out on the streets & mug people? A lot of my friends on the other hand, lived on an estate with parents that worked night shifts and had no hobbies or interests. (Apart from the Saturday football match which would be the highlight of their week).

I am sure you have seen the parents in your local supermarket that scream & swear at their children for having a bit of a whine? The ones that fill their trolleys high with microwave meals, junk and booze? These are the parents that are causing this new breed of ‘Chav' - People that don't really care about their children, and don't strive for high standards. I am certain that with the right chances, these people could be so successful it would make Gold Medallist Chris Hoy quake in his cycling shoes. All they need is to be given the opportunities, and certainly the option to do better and move away from the city.

Is it too late?...

It is not cool to be sober or hard working anymore, so does this mean that it is too late to help? Gangs will never surrender their divide, and drugs are an easy way to make money & escape from the real world - It would take far more effort to get clean and start over.
But rather than ploughing all this money in to failing banks and immigration, why doesn't the government build more youth and sports centres? Give cheap or free training to under privileged people that want to work? Surely looking after our poorer people and getting them in to jobs and off benefits is key to a better England.
