Utilization of Web Based Materials as Instructional Tools in Clinical Chemistry

Looking into the utilization of web based instructional tools for clinical chemistry.

Education has to keep pace with technology and science. It is only when it does that education could serve its genuine purpose in nation building and development.

Computer-assisted instruction, media programs, programmed instructions, web based instructional tools are very important materials in the teaching and learning process.

Students nowadays, utilize technology - like the Internet, webcam, voice chat, teleconferences, as a way to develop their social community in and out of school. Even cell phones are used now to record lectures and save power point slides and many others. This students' awareness and knowledge of the use of this technology should be encouraged and could be maximized to enhance their academic output. In the advent of computer related activities, interacting on line has been made a part of all aspects in society, be it in business, travel, science, research, and education. It is apparent that without the computer, communication in all fronts would come to a standstill or will virtually cease to be. All modern offices have access to computers and more so with academic institutions and clinical laboratories. Having this technology in an office denotes that the office is well managed, more organized and more updated with the dynamic growth of science and technology.

How to determine what method to use

The determination of an effective method of teaching should be the method that would best suit the learners in a particular setting at a particular venue. The course syllabus, nature of learners, reference books, available materials, appropriate instructional strategies, institutional and professional requirements, the opinion of Clinical Chemistry instructors from other Universities and the updates on computer technology and web based instructional materials should all be considered.

What is Clinical Chemistry?

Clinical Chemistry 1 & 2 are 3 unit subjects, offered to Medical Technology students . Clinical Chemistry 1 involves Pure Blood Chemistry while Clinical Chemistry 2 is about Endocrinology and Toxicology. Just like any other major subjects, both consist of 2 hour-lectures and 3-hour laboratory periods per week.

Clinical chemistry involves the assays of blood constituents like electrolytes, hormones and various important substances present in blood are measured and then used as an index for the presence of disease. The measurement of these blood constituents entails not only lots of skill and proficiency but also relevant , updated principles behind each determination. Students should also be aware of utilizing the vast array of computer and web based instructional tools.

Maximizing the utilization of the web based material

The Medical Technology student should be able to use to his advantage all these computer technology and web based materials. The teacher therefore; should have the appropriate skill in managing and integrating computer aided instruction and web-based instructional tools in his clinical subject. This is a great and daunting but necessary challenge for instructors. Educational technology in the global area is changing at a fast pace and the teacher and the student should keep at par with it or the knowledge that he has acquired would no longer be relevant to the needs of the society in which he exists in, when the time comes for the student to apply it.
