Amazing Living Things And Their Amazing Traits

The world is filled with amazing things. Let's find out some of them.

 

Bobbies and Gannets

Bobbies and gannets hatch their eggs by standing on them, warming them with their webbed feet.

Penguins

Penguins hatch their eggs by putting them on top of their feet, where they are covered by a special fold of skin on the underside of the belly.

Songbirds

Male songbirds are usually the only ones to sing.

Hawks and Owls

Hawks and owls keep the same mate for life.

Cranes and Geese

Cranes and geese migrate at an altitude of 15,000 to 21,000 feet.

Bee Hummingbird

Bee hummingbird weigh only about 1.8 grams less than a US penny. Its tiny wings beat 80 times per second. Using all the energy requires them to eat half their body weight in food each day as well as drink 8x their body weight in water. When compared to a 150 lbs. man he is drinking 144 gallons a day.

Bristle Cone Pines and Creosote Bush

These plants can grow up to 4,500 years old or older.

Venus's Flytrap

Venus' flytrap is a predatory plant that captures and eats insect

Oak Toad

Oak toad is the smallest amphibian measuring ¾ in. to 1 ½ in. only.

Tuatara

Tuatara a kind of reptile from New Zealand remains unchanged for nearly 190 million years. They can live for more than 100 years or more in their natural habitat.

Duck Hawk

Duck hawk, a sub-species of the peregrine falcon, is the fastest bird reaching a speed of 290 km/hr. in a dive.

Shrew

Savi's pygmy shrew is the smallest mammal in the world. Water shrews can run on the surface of the water. Shrew must eat day and night in order to keep alive. It eats 2 to 3 times its own weight in food each day.

Aphids

Aphids are born pregnant without the benefit of sex. Aphids can give birth 10 days after being born themselves.

Flea

Flea can propel from 50 to 150 times its body length and can jump nearly 13 in. and a vertical leap of almost 8 in. compared to its sized which is not more than one quarter inch.

Cockroaches

Cockroaches only need to be impregnated once to be able to lay eggs for the rest of its life. Cockroaches can live for 3 months w/o food, 1 month w/o water and 4 hours without air.

Salmon

Salmons migrate from the sea to freshwater in order to spawn. After spawning, the Pacific salmon dies.

European Eels

European Eels travels about 4,800 km to spawn in the Sargasso Sea in the North Atlantic. The eel larvae travel an equal distance to reach Europe. They accomplished the journey in about 3 years.

Chiasmodon

Chiasmodon is a fish that inhabits deep ocean waters, is able to swallow fish twice its size.

Archerfish

Archerfish shoots down flying insects for food by squirting water at them.

Four-eyed Fish

The eyes of a four-eyed fish have divided pupils. The upper half of each eye is adapted in seeing in air, the lower half can see in the water.

Whale Sharks

Most fishes are nearsighted but whale sharks are farsighted.

Age of Fish

The age of most fishes are determined by their scales. The scales bear annual rings similar to those of tree trunks.

Elephants

Huge as they are but they can run faster than human at a speed of 40 km/hr compared to man's 37km/hr.

Seals

They do not have tear ducts that's why they look like crying when they're on land. They can dive as deep as 2,000 feet. Seals return year after year to their birthplace and newly born pup are fully developed and can swim immediately.

Walrus

A male walrus with the largest tusk is usually the leader of the herd. They have pharyngeal or throat pouches, which they can inflate to keep afloat while sleeping in the water.

Bats

They are the only mammal capable of true flight. Some species have ears that are larger than the body. Bats mate only once a year.

Flying Lemur

This animal does not actually fly but glides and leap. They can glide up to 200 feet.

Kinkajou

It is the only mammal that helps pollinate plants.

Capybara

Capybara is the world's largest rodent with an average weight of 100 pounds. They are called rodent because they have sharp teeth that never stop growing.

Duckbill Platypus or Duck Mole

Platypus is an egg laying mammal of Australia. Their ears are located in furrows behind the eyes. The male spiny spurs on its hind give off poisonous secretion like the venom of snake's fang which is use for defense.

Dolphins

Dolphins sometimes also engage on acts of a homosexual nature. Various dolphin species have been known to engage in sexual behavior with other dolphin species.

Very interesting article, nobert! I looked on the Internet to find out what Bobbies and Gannets were because I have never heard of them before. The fact that a bird stands on their eggs to keep them warm is amazing.

I didn't know the facts about Aphids, Cockroaches, and Dolphins.

Very interesting indeed.
