Amazing Animals and Their Bizarre Characteristics

These extraordinary animals have peculiar traits.

Animals are one of the largest groups of living things inhabiting the Earth. The world is full of peculiar animals. We still have lots of things to discover about the earth and its creatures. Here are some of the many amazing animals in the world.

Mayfly

The mayfly is unique among insects in that it molts in winged form. The adult mayfly lack mouthpart and is unable to eat. It lives no more than two days, during which time it finds a mate and breeds.

Asiatic Swift

This bird makes its nest almost entirely out of saliva which then hardens; it is this nest to make bird's-nest soup. The edible bird's nest is among the most expensive animal products consumed by humans. An Asiatic swift can also sleep and mate on their wings.

Portuguese Man-of-War

This is a floating compound marine animal made up of a colony of four kinds of polyp. Food catching polyps form tentacles that maybe 40 ft. long, with stinging parts that paralyze or kill most fish or other prey on contact. Then feeding polyps close around the prey and digest it. The sting is painful to humans and can cause nausea and convulsion.

Phoronida

Phoronida, small, wormlike water-dwelling animals are the smallest animals having red blood. They are commonly known as horse shoe worms.

Ice Fish and Marble Plunder Fish

Ice fish and Marble Plunder fish have natural antifreeze in their body. These are a suborder of mostly bottom-dwelling fish of the Southern Ocean.

Plaice

The eyes of a plaice are located on one side of the head and it swims this side facing up. They can be found at depths up to approximately 200m.

Piranha

Piranhas are the most ferocious animals in the world, they attack any living animal- including man- that enter the water they inhabit and often eat their own kind.

Anthropods and Mollusk

The color of the blood of these animals are bluish-green.

Sponge & Flatworm

Sponges and flatworms have no blood.

Giraffe

Giraffes, although often described as voiceless, have vocal chords and, on occasion, make low moaning and bleating sounds. They cannot lower their heads to drink without spreading their forelegs apart.

Lungfish

Lungfish is a fish that breathes with a lung as well as by gills. They can live out of water for months.

*Sea Weeds

Sea weeds are harvested for food or fertilizer. These are also used to make “ice cream and toothpaste.”

I would never remember the Plaice if it were not for this article. I remember seeing one on TV once but even though I found them unusual with both eyes on the same side of the head, I didn't know they swam on their side with eyes up.

It must take the swift a very long time to build their nest...I wonder if they come back to the same nest each year.
